When Syd Selden opened a store in Tacoma in 1940, selling window shades and floor coverings, he launched his business with five employees. It grew, prospered and established itself as one of the Northwest’s leading furniture retailers. Now this family business includes three stores—Selden’s Home Furnishings, Bassett of Tacoma and Selden’s Sleep Gallery—all conveniently located adjacent to each other and Interstate 5 in Fife.. Even after seven decades of meeting customers’ needs, innovations keep it fresh and relevant.
On Oct. 11, 2012, Selden’s opened Furniture Now, a gallery inside the Selden’s Home Furnishings store with additional choices for a changing marketplace. And it features a new brand name: “North Port is our brand,” said current owner Scott Selden. “We brought in some new vendors and suppliers that we’re sourcing from all over the world via the direct container process.
Furniture Now suits what Selden calls “the new economy.” “People are a little more budget conscious, and they’re also requesting a faster delivery time,” he said. “Furniture Now was designed to answer that immediate gratification and also some of the budget issues that some people may be facing today.” Although this line does not offer customized orders, it does offer online shopping, with complete information on size, finish and price.
While meeting the needs of customers, Selden’s also cares about the needs of the community. “We participate in a lot of local charity events, and we’re fairly heavily involved with the Northwest Furniture Bank,” Selden said, referring to a local organization that provides furniture to people in need. “We donate furniture on a regular basis.”
