The Thanksgiving Play Comes to SPSCC

The South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) Theatre Collective presents The Thanksgiving Play at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts from Feb. 25 to Mar. 6, 2022.

The Thanksgiving Play, written by Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse in 2015, is a one-act satirical comedy. The play follows four white people trying to put together a politically correct First Thanksgiving play for Native American Heritage Month to be performed in schools. Without the Native voice, these four white people attempt to find their way through issues of privilege, historical accuracy, and school district rules.

The production stars Jesse Morrow, Jordan Baker, Scarlet Nixon Klein, and Running Start student Julian Owen in his third production at SPSCC. Some of his previous roles include: Frankie, The Highest Tide (Harlequin Productions); Michael, Tragedy, a Tragedy (SPSCC); Ensemble, I Am Nobody’s Lunch (SPSCC); and Markley, Radium Girls (Capital High School).

Also from the SPSCC community, Melissa Avril Harris makes her directorial debut withThe Thanksgiving Play. Over the past seventeen years, she has stage managed around the Sound: Harlequin Productions (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Intimate Apparel, The Elephant Man); Olympia Family Theater (Three Impossible Questions,The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane); Lakewood Playhouse (A Christmas Carol, Angels in America Parts I & II); and SPSCC (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time).

“I’m excited to showcase the incredible talents, creativity, and hard work of this amazing production team (i.e. cast, crew, designers, SPSCC students, and community partners),” shared Harris. “This has been a true collaboration and demonstrates how teamwork absolutely makes the dream work!”

Admission is a suggested $10 donation at the door. Proof of vaccination and face coverings are required to attend. More information, including performance dates and times, is available on the college’s Arts & Entertainment page.
