Dance Theatre Northwest recently completed its highly anticipated Adult Ballet Summer Intensive, drawing dancers from across the region for four days of inspiring classes, movement, and connection. The immersive program, designed exclusively for adult dancers, provided a rare opportunity for individuals of all backgrounds and abilities to train, grow, and rediscover the joy of ballet in an encouraging and inclusive setting.
Held in both of DTNW’s newly renewed professional-grade studios now featuring a refreshed dance surface designed to support adult bodies and protect joints. The program was a celebration of artistry, resilience, and the adult dancer’s journey. From the first plié to the final reverence, the studio buzzed with energy, laughter, and a shared commitment to personal growth.
A Program Designed With Adults in Mind
What truly set this intensive apart was its accessibility and thoughtfulness. The program welcomed dancers of varying physical abilities, ages, and personal journeys, embracing the diversity that makes adult dance so powerful. Whether participants had trained consistently or were returning after a long break, they were met with encouragement and respect.
Each day featured a blend of classes including ballet technique, conditioning, stretch, petit allegro, variations, pointe and pre-pointe. To ensure everyone received the training best suited to their current level, six of the sessions were split into two groups: one for advanced/beginners and one for more advanced/intermediate dancers. This thoughtful structure allowed every dancer to be challenged without being overwhelmed and to experience the joy of progress, whether they were refining fundamentals or diving into more complex combinations.
An Environment That Encouraged Growth and Friendship
More than just a training program, the Adult Intensive fostered a sense of community that left a lasting impression on all who attended. Participants described the environment as welcoming, uplifting, and deeply motivating. Many noted how rare it is to find a space where adult dancers are not only welcomed but truly seen and celebrated for who they are.
Classmates became cheerleaders, instructors became mentors, and by the final day, the group had formed a bond that many were reluctant to leave behind. “We didn’t want it to end,” one dancer remarked.
Special Guest Faculty and Inspired Instruction
The intensive featured a dynamic teaching team led by Artistic Director Melanie Kirk-Stauffer, along with guest artist Richard Philion and DTNW’s experienced faculty. Each instructor brought their own passion, insight, and teaching style to the program. Participants enjoyed a well-rounded and enriching experience thanks to the faculty’s depth and diversity.
The response to this year’s Adult Ballet Intensive has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants already asking when they can register for next year. Dance Theatre Northwest is excited to announce that planning is already underway for the 2026 program, which promises to build on this year’s momentum with even more offerings for adult dancers.
DTNW offers dance classes for all ages throughout the year—including ballet, tap, jazz, and more—for youth, teens, and adults.
