In Tacoma’s Theater District, the historic Ledger building, once the home of the News Tribune, has been transformed and now houses the offices of Ledger Square Law. The four partners of the firm traded the high-rise and big-firm experience for small-firm flexibility and efficiency.
Partner Jason Whalen envisioned a unique space that allowed for a collaborative law practice in creative surroundings. In August 2014, the partners started the project, and the offices of Ledger Square Law opened on January 1, 2015. The newly formed law firm offers a new twist on an old concept—meeting clients’ legal needs through both “high touch” and “high tech” in a comfortable, approachable urban-street-front setting.
“In most offices the people are not seen—they are tucked behind the scenes. We purposely created a space that is spacious and open, and you see everyone that is working on site,” says Whalen. The reaction to this innovative approach has been very positive, he says.
The offices radiate an ambiance of Northwest artistic minimalism. Glass and artwork are significant design elements in the space, and functional art pieces resonate here. The boardroom table was hand-designed by a local artist, and chic glass creates a modern feel. The reception desk was cleverly crafted from refurbished wood.
One of the firm’s side interests has been to display works by Puget Sound–area artists in its urban-chic gallery-like office space. Plans are to rotate the art quarterly to allow for a procession of artists to share their work through the space.
