LeMay – America’s Car Museum proudly unveils the world premiere of For Gold & Glory, an exhibition that brings to life the extraordinary story of Charlie Wiggins . He was a brilliant driver, mechanic, innovator, and four-time Gold & Glory champion whose achievements were long overlooked in the history of American motorsports.
The exhibition invites visitors into the vibrant world of Indiana Avenue and the Gold & Glory Sweepstakes, where Wiggins’ talent and determination shone against the backdrop of 1920s America. Through rare photographs, artifacts, automotive design, sound, and immersive storytelling, guests will experience both Wiggins’ genius and the challenges faced by Black racers in a segregated era.
Ed Welburn, former Vice President of Global Design at General Motors, serves as guest curator. His passion for Wiggins’ legacy has guided every detail of this exhibition, ensuring the story is told with the care and respect it deserves.
“Charlie Wiggins was far more than a great race car driver,” says Welburn. “He was a visionary craftsman and champion who triumphed over barriers that should never have existed. My hope is that visitors arrive not knowing his name and leave inspired by his courage and perseverance.”
The exhibition launched on August 7 , exactly 100 years after Wiggins won his first championship in the Wiggins Special, the car he built himself. That original, one-of-one race car is unveiled for the first time in over 90 years.
