Peninsula Transit is now ADA accessible and offering free rides for everyone. Being able to transport from the Key Peninsula all the way down to Gig Harbor and back up every hour. This pilot program has been in the works for several years. Thanks to the tenacity of not only our local government but also the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the community members surrounding this project, they secured enough funds to start this pilot program.
Funded by the county and the State of Washington until summer, with hopes to keep this program running even longer, the committee encourages taking the bus. The more the community rides during the pilot, the higher the possibility of expanding the funding for transit on the Key Peninsula and keeping this program going.
Running Monday through Saturday from December 2025 through August 2026, the 8-month pilot is a collaboration between Pierce County, Around the Sound Transportation, and the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. To kick off the program, Peninsula Transit will partner with the Key Peninsula / Gig Harbor Holiday Shuttle to offer seven-day-a-week service from Black Friday, November 28th, until December 26, 2025, giving residents expanded access during the busiest shopping and event season of the year.
“For many Key Peninsula residents, this means more than just a ride. It’s access to opportunity, connection, and community,” said Rosalyn Rochac-Finnegan, Tourism Director for Visit Gig Harbor and supporter of the program. “This service helps families, students, seniors, and workers travel safely to jobs, healthcare, shopping, and local events while also strengthening ties between the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor.”
Taking the Shuttle will increase the economy in both Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula. With no age restrictions and route times extending 12 hours through the day, anyone can take the transit. Arrange your book club or group of friends to take the bus, and make it a great night of going out on the town, so this pilot transit program can become a permanent feature across the bridge.
