Following a short three-month closure for renovations, the Pacific Northwest Shop on Proctor in North Tacoma held its re-opening event on Saturday, May 21. Originally created in 1978 by Ann and Bill Evans, the shop is now owned and operated by their son Matt Evans and Cédric Poisson.
With the help of Matt’s younger brother, Paul Evans, owner of Proctor Handyman and Home Renovations, the goal was to lighten and expand the space. Some of the changes included the installment of new luxury vinyl wood flooring that replaced the tile and carpet. Several sectional walls were removed to create a more open space. A window and door that had been sealed over have now been reopened and resurfaced to let light in. Neon lighting was removed, the space was painted throughout, and the lighting was redesigned.
“People love it … so many visitors have asked about the color of blue we used. Someone wanted to know what the flooring was,” said Matt. “Bringing the light into the space really worked well because the most popular word used to describe the new store is ‘Airy’.”
When you visit the new store, you will find many of the same brands and products carried by the store for years like Huckleberry jams and syrups, or candies from Chuker Cherries, Almond Roca, or Seattle Chocolate. But you will also find their latest discoveries from local artists and vendors.
According to Matt, “We are always, always looking for new products.” Whether the owners are visiting local street fairs or meeting people that come into the store, new vendors and artists are a priority for the business.
From local wines to fun Big Foot t-shirts, and locally made pottery to volcanic ash glasswork, Pacific Northwest Shop hosts a large collection of specialty foods, decorative items, jewelry, books, bath and body products and North Coast Indian designs.
