The Kids are Doing Alright

We all love our kids and want them to grow up to be strong, intelligent, and kind people. Lofty goals. To help us reach that goal, the South Sound is filled with many nonprofit agencies and programs to expand their horizons, test their leadership skills, and sometimes, just let them play!

With core beliefs to inspire and enable youth to realize their greatness and reach their full potential, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County has several locations including Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, Rochester and Yelm, plus the RMAC at North Thurston High School. The organization stands on three pillars: academic success, character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

Connecting youth to food system education and fostering a love of plants, animals and nature is one of the many goals of GRuB out of Thurston County. GRuB engages teens/ young adults on the GRuB Farm and through community service to help break cycles of hunger, poverty, inequality and oppression. Youth programs at GRuB include GRuB Farm, Tend, Gather and Grow and are focused on the themes of “Farming Self, Land and Community.”

Students at twelve Tacoma elementary schools have onsite access to expanded learning opportunities like visual and performing arts, dance, robotics, STEM, mentorship, sports, and more through a Greater Tacoma Community Foundation program called Tacoma Whole Child, in partnership with the Tacoma School District. The program—which takes place before, during, and after school—provides a safe place for students to learn new skills, build positive relationships, and connect with their community.

HopeSparks envisions a world where all children and families are safe, secure, and stable. Their mission is to strengthen families by inspiring courage and confidence to make a lasting change. HopeSparks programs serve children and families in Pierce County who face trauma, abuse, and overwhelming life challenges. Providing counseling and home visits, HopeSparks also distributes basic needs through their HopesCloset program in a dignified, warm shopping environment.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County: Youth Inspiring Youth

Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County inspire youth to realize their greatness. Boys & Girls Clubs fill the gap between school and home by providing a welcoming, positive, out-of-school environment. Kids and teens have fun, participate in life-changing programs, and build supportive relationships with peers and caring youth development professionals.

From homework help to tutoring, art to sports, and STEM activities to gaming, the Club experience prepares kids and teens for future success. By focusing Club activities on academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles, youth are better prepared to graduate from high school, have a plan for their futures, and thrive as adults.

Nearly 3,000 kids and teens find safety and support annually at Clubs in Lacey, Olympia, Rochester, Tenino, Tumwater, Yelm, and new this year, a second Lacey branch located in the Raj Manhas Activity Center (RMAC). Low membership fees and scholarships keep the Club accessible to youth who need them most, thanks to 76% of funding coming from generous individuals and community supporters.
