US Premiere of The Seven Symphonies: A Classical Tribute to Beach Boys Music
The Olympia Symphony Orchestra on September 16, 2023
The North American debut of Seven Symphonies: A Classical Tribute to Beach Boys Music happens in Olympia on September 16. The Olympia Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alexandra Arrieche will bring thrills to Beach Boys fans, orchestra lovers looking for new music, and anyone who wants 90 minutes of pleasure for their hearts and spirits.
“We are able to bring this music back to where it originates from: the U.S. west coast,” says Rob van Weedle, producer and creative force of this epic orchestration that was four years in the making. The project was initiated by WedgeView Music Enterprise Netherlands in 2017. The world premiere was performed last June at the Antwerp City Theater by the Antwerp Philharmonic conducted by Arrieche.
The Olympia Symphony Orchestra is the new sister of that orchestra, making the premiere here extra special. “I can’t wait to hear our amazing musicians bringing the symphonies to life and add our own flavor to it, and I am looking forward to share that with the community,” says Arrieche.
Van Weelde credits his mother for introducing him to Beach Boys music. Thirty-three songs
were carefully selected and transformed into an orchestra score. The last 20 minutes take inspiration from Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson’s studio album. The recording launched a new era of music production with complex instrumental and vocal parts with elaborate layers of sound from untraditional sources. It’s influenced the history of music.
The Olympia area is reaping the benefit from the friendship among Arrieche and van Weelde and arranger, Roeland Jacobs. “I have known Alex since 2016, and we have been working together on music projects ever since 2019,” says van Weelde. Jacobs and van Weelde, who reside in Belgium, will be in Olympia for the days leading up to the concert. If you miss this show, you’ll have to catch the next one in Cape Town, South Africa next March.
“The best way in the world to forget misery is to make friends and enjoy life to its fullest, especially when Brian Wilson is involved,” recommends van Weedle.
