United Way of Pierce County is proud to announce a significant evolution in how we connect local residents to the services they need. As of October 1st, we are transitioning from the traditional 211 call center model to a more responsive, locally operated resource navigation center, designed to provide personalized, community-based support for individuals and families across Pierce County.
“For years, 211 has been a trusted entry point for people seeking help,” said Dona Ponepinto, President and CEO of United Way of Pierce County. “But our community’s needs have outgrown the simple information and referral service. By transitioning to a resource navigation center, we can deepen connections, reduce barriers, and respond faster with the support that residents truly need.”
Access Pierce offers phone, text, and online chat navigation services that go beyond simple referrals. Trained Resource Navigators work directly with clients to understand their full situation and create action plans that connect them to housing, food, transportation, healthcare, childcare, employment, and other critical supports.
This transition is also a response to community feedback and growing demand for a more tailored, human-centered approach, especially at a time when federal and state budget cuts are threatening safety nets across the region.
Key benefits of the new Resource Navigation Center include:
- Local Expertise: Services led by community-based staff who understand Pierce County’s unique challenges and resources.
- Deeper Support: Navigators provide follow-up, problem-solving, and coordinated care—not just referrals.
- Broader Access: Clients can connect via phone, text, or by chat 24/7.
- Integrated Services: Stronger partnerships with local nonprofits, governments, and faith-based organizations ensure no one falls through the cracks.
United Way of Pierce County remains committed to ensuring a safety net for all. “This is about building something that truly reflects our community’s needs and strengths,” said Ponepinto. “Together, we’re creating a more effective, compassionate way to help families not just survive—but thrive.”
