Parents and educators have a new tutoring resource in Kitsap County. Viking Education Academy opened in June of 2024 with the goal of building a high-quality tutoring hub at their facility in Poulsbo. Owned by Ingemar Anderson and Barbara Heitman, Viking Education Academy offers a wide range of services, including K-12 tutoring, adult education, summer educational programs, workshops, and specialized tutoring for students with learning challenges, such as dyslexia.
According to Anderson, “We wanted to help the community and offer our facilities in a way that was helpful to those in our area.” The great location and wonderful building, coupled with Barbara’s background in teaching and tutoring, made opening Viking Educational Academy a natural fit.
With four pillars to their mantra, only professional educators, no politics or opinions, a focus on back to basics in education, and attention to every individual student, Viking Education Academy began their operation with a few students and classes. The goal to build their enrollees to 250+ would mean hiring more tutors and utilizing more rooms in the building for group tutoring and more continuing education programs for adults.
“We felt these ideas were the cornerstone of what parents were looking for,” said Anderson. “We want to be neutral in any ideology by focusing on knowledge and experiences for students.” Viking also wants to be forward looking, using technology and AI when it makes sense to do so. They work to make individual student learning plans that focus not just on content, but also the learning methodology.
With aspirations to be a resource with and for the community, Viking Education Academy aims to be a big hub for the entire peninsula. Through K-12 tutoring, Test Prep, various on-line courses, the addition of summer Academy Programs and adult continuing education courses like their current course ‘Nurturing Relationships for Adults’, Viking Education Academy is working to meet that goal.
