Everyone is welcome at Lakewold Gardens, a once-private estate and retreat nestled in a Lakewood neighborhood between Gravelly Lake and Gravelly Drive. In 1987, the ten-acre property was donated to the nonprofit organization The Friends of Lakewold so that it would remain a public garden. It is a hidden gem where people can stroll the grounds, attend events, and inhale the beauty and calm of this unique legacy.
It’s been a busy past two years with Justin Henderson as the executive director. Major updating and renovations have been underway. “We transformed the entry garden, added plants, and restructured the stroll experience,” he explains. The historic Wagner House with its 7,000 square-feet of area has been remodeled including a new cedar roof. “It has new life,” adds Henderson. It is perfect for art exhibits. “People will notice the seasonal displays are stronger, too.”

Many of the pathways are now easier to navigate for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers with pea gravel underfoot. You can bring a picnic and sit on your blanket on the lawn area or use one of the tables scattered throughout the property. Your service dog can come along but leave your other pets at home. Lakewold Gardens is a multi-purpose place where all ages can admire the beauty, celebrate art or music, explore and reflect. Plan your visit for an hour or longer.
Lakewold Gardens keeps a calendar of events that appeal to families, community and fun. In the spring, the Mother’s Day Stroll and the FairyFest are popular with families. August’s Pour in the Park highlights local wine, beer and cider with food trucks on site, and All Hallows’ Eve offers spooky encounters and fun for two weekends in October.
The holidays bring Winter Glow, which will be especially lit and festive. It’s becoming a family tradition that offers a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of space. The house will be in full festive garb and Santa will be on hand for photos.
Lakewold Gardens is open year-round, but hours vary by season, so check the website before your visit. Be sure to check the calendar for more information about upcoming events. The Garden is also a beautiful venue for weddings, receptions, showers or other special occasions.
