There’s a quiet transformation happening across Kitsap County, one that’s bringing faster, more reliable internet service to more homes and neighborhoods than ever before. Kitsap Public Utility District (KPUD), your local, community-owned utility, is adding 21 new fiber distribution nodes across the county, all thanks to a $6.6 million investment from Kitsap County using federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
While the buildings themselves may be small, their impact is mighty. Each node is a secure, high-tech hub that powers high-speed broadband connections for up to 7,680 homes—boosting internet speeds, reducing outages, and helping to bring service to places that have long gone without it.
“These new nodes are about building for the future,” said KPUD General Manager Angela Bennink. “They’ll strengthen our open-access network, increase capacity, and support faster, more robust broadband for our neighbors across Kitsap. We’re grateful to Kitsap County for allocating ARPA funding toward this essential public infrastructure.”
KPUD’s fiber network isn’t your typical setup. It’s open-access, meaning the infrastructure is publicly owned, but residents and businesses can choose from multiple internet service providers (ISPs) that operate on the system. With six ISPs offering plans from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps, the goal is to give the community real choice, value, and performance, without being locked into a monopoly.
Construction is already underway and expected to wrap up in 2026. In addition to the new nodes, the project includes equipment upgrades and strategic fiber extensions to strengthen existing service.
KPUD’s broadband efforts are rooted in its mission to serve the public. Since launching residential fiber in 2015, KPUD has connected over 2,500 homes and 300 businesses, while continuing to support schools, libraries, first responders, and more with nearly 950 miles of fiber infrastructure. In short, it’s broadband built for Kitsap by Kitsap.
